Hi, I have to number measures in a piece for something, and I wanted to know, since the piece has two movements, if I should start over at one on the second movement or keep going with the last number of measure on the first movement. Thanks!Numbering music measures with different movements?
Start over for each movement. If there's an upbeat at the start, this is not counted as a measure.
If there are repeats written out, you will have to number all the measures, but this often is not done when repeats are used.Numbering music measures with different movements?
Typically the measure numbers start over at the next movement.
If this is your own composition or even arrangement, number the measures however you like. I have seen it both ways. If it's your creation, do what you feel suits your work.
If this is a transcription (or whatever else), copy what is being done in the master copy, the manuscript from which you are copying. And if measures are not numbered in your master copy, begin at 1 for each movement.
The safest route is to restart your numbering after each movement. Do it this way if you're unsure.
