Please help with page numbering problemon Microsoft Word?

Hello to everyone

Can you please help me with the numbering of my coursework which i did on Microsoft Word.

My problem is that when i command the program to number pages it starts from the cover and contents page which isn't supposed to show.

What can i do to start the page numbering from page 3, so i want page 3 to have the number 3. But the previous pages (1 and 2) not have page numbers.

ThanksPlease help with page numbering problemon Microsoft Word?
You make the un-numbered pages a distinct section, then put headers and/or footers on the section after it, this way: (Note: This entry is long because it contains two sets of instructions: One for Word 2007 and one for previous versions.)

In Word versions earlier than Word 2007 (Vista):

1. At the top of the first page you want numbered, click the Insert-%26gt;Break menu item.

2. Insert a Next Page type section break.

3. Move the cursor down a few lines so it's in the new section you just created.

4. Click on the View-%26gt;Headers and Footers menu item. You should now see and be able to edit the section's header.

5. One of the icons on the Headers toolbar that pops up, probably the fifth from the right, will say ';Same as Previous'; when you hover the cursor over it. Click it to disconnect the header from the previous one.

6. The one to its right will say ';Switch between Header and Footer'; Click it.

7. You're now in the footer. Repeat step 5.

8. A third icon, probably the one to the right of the Switch one, will say ';Move to Previous'; Click it. You've now moved to the footer of the first section.

9. If there's a page number in the header or footer for this section, delete it.

10. Close the toolbar.

11. Go into the second section.

12. Click on the Insert-%26gt;Page Numbers menu item.

13. Click on the Format button.

14. If you want the first section鈥檚 page numbers to count but not show, click Continuous.

15. Or, if you want the page numbering to start at one, click Start At. A 1 should show up in the list box adjacent to it.

16. Click OK.

17. Click OK to actually insert the page number.

In Word 2007:

1. Click at the top of the first page you want numbered.

2. Click the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon.

3. Click the Breaks icon in the Page Setup group.

4. Insert a Next Page type section break.

5. Click on the Insert tab on the Ribbon.

6. Click the Header icon and select Edit Header.

7. Deselect Link To Previous in the Design tab that appeared on the Ribbon.

8. Go back to the Insert tab and repeat Steps 5 to 7 for the Footer.

9. If there's a page number in the header or footer for the first section, delete it.

10. Go into the second section.

11. On the Design tab again, click the Page Number icon

12. Click Format Page Numbers.

13. If you want the first section鈥檚 page numbers to count but not show, click Continuous.

14. Or, if you want the page numbering to start at one, click Start At. A 1 should show up in the list box adjacent to it.

15. Click OK.

16. Click OK to actually insert the page number.

That should do it. What you now have is two sections. Both sections have headers and footers, but the page number will appear only in the second section.

Hope that helps. Please help with page numbering problemon Microsoft Word?
you are going to either have to do two things

allow for the first two pages to be blank and throw them away when you print and start off at page 3

or you are going to have to manually put in your page numbers.

here is how you do that

pull up your document go to the top and select insert%26gt;pagenumbers

then select where you want your page numbers to be.

you will then see your regular 1,2,3 page numbers on your pages.

take your mouse and put it over the number and double click- your ';header/footer'; will be selected.. KEEP your mouse over that number and double click AGAIN and you will have selected the actual number. highlight the number and put in the number you desire

do this again and again for the other pages putting in the numbers you want
Set up the header and footer on the cover page. Leave them both blank. At the bottom of the last contents page, insert a section break (Insert/Break/Section next page).

Go to the header (or footer - where the page numbering should be) on the next page, click the ';same as previous page) icon on the header/footer toolbar, so this page ISN'T the same as the previous page, and set up the page number. Click ';format page number and, at the bottom, tell it to start at page 1 (if that's what you want).
In word you can specify the page number start value, to do it proceed as follow (because I don't know the word version you are using, I will explain for word 2003 and word 2007)::

鈥?Page Numbers in Word 2003: http://homeworktips.about.com/od/compute鈥?/a>

鈥?Page Numbers in Word 2007: use the Insert tab and select the Page Number icon, the rest is the same as above (word 2003)

SUMMARY

WORD 2003

1. From the Insert menu, select Page Numbers

2. Select the position and alignment you want for the page numbers.

3. If you want to change the numbering style or starting number, click Format

4. Click OK to return to your document.

WORD 2007

1. Select the Insert tab, and then select the Page Number icon.

2. Select the position and alignment you want for the page numbers.

3. If you want to change the numbering style or starting number, click Format Page Numbers.

4. Click OK to return to your document.

TIP: Define 2 sections in your document (Page Numbers in Word 2003, explains how to define sections):

鈥?Section 1: will be page 1 and 2. Don't insert any page number

鈥?Section 2: begins from page 3. For this section insert the page number indicating that it will start with the number 1 or 3 (you choose)
