How do you turn off the crossed out numbering in Word 2003?

I'm editing a document in Word 2003. It has numbered sections and sub sections. My problem is when I delete a subsection, Word renumbers it, but it shows the previous number with a strikout at the same time. Say if I delete (c), Word will renumber the next section as (d)(c), with the (d) crossed out.

Sounds like you have ';Track Changes'; enabled. On the top toolbar select Tools %26gt; Track Changes %26gt; Highlight Changes. Uncheck ';Track Changes While Editing'; and that should take care of your issue.
