HELP! MS Word is so frustrating. How do I number the first 3 pages, then have no numbering on the rest?

I have it set up so that the first page number is hidden, then pages 2 and 3 are visible. I have created a new section for the following pages. The first page number is hidden, however, on the 2nd page of that section (5th page overall), the numbers start at 2! I don't want any numbers, but when i delete it, the page numbers from the first pages are deleted as well.HELP! MS Word is so frustrating. each SECTION can have a separate header/footer...

make the 5th page a new section.

view the header footer and click on the icon that says 'link to previous'. That will cause it to unlink from page 4 and then you can clear the page number in the header/footer of page 5 and it won't reappear.HELP! MS Word is so frustrating. Try this (with Word XP (2002) and the adjacent versions. Word Vista (2007) probably has something similar):

1. Click anywhere in that second section.

2. Double click in the header or footer (wherever the page number is). This will open that header or footer and display a Header and Footer toolbar.

3. Click the Same as Previous button (probably fourth from the Close button). This will disconnect that header/footer from the first section's.

You should now be able to delete the page number without affecting the previous section's.

Hope that helps.
By the way, I'm not really technically savvy, so this is the only thing that I can come up with at the moment.

If you don't want any page numbers on that section, you could just copy and paste the section into a new Microsoft Word document and not insert page numbers, and keep the other part in that separate document. You would have the two sections separated into two documents, but at least it would sort out the page numbering issues!

Actually, wait! I came up with something else!

You could just insert a small, white AutoShape without a line in from Microsoft Word (in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen,) and put it right over the page numbers for the page numbers that you don't want. They would be covered up by the autoshape. If your background colour isn't white, then just make the colour of the autoshape the same colour as the background. I know this isn't the easiest or most technical way, but it could work!

Actually, the AutoShape wouldn't cover the page number. Never mind. Sorry.

Good luck!
The only way to do it is to create two different documents for the two sections.

First document: format numbers to start at 1 but then select ';do not show number on first page';

Second document: don't insert any page numbers.

Hope this helps.
