It's because the extra number pushes the text over to the next tab. You can change it. Highlight all of your numbered text, then right click, select Bullets %26amp; Numbering, Numbered tab, Customize button.
To change the tab space of the first line after the number, click the blue dropdown arrow next to Tab Space After, then move the tab space. You'll see it move in the Preview box. If your text wraps around to a second line, you can also change that line's indent by selecting the blue dropdown arrow next to Indent At. If you play around with those two options, you can set the look to exactly what you want.
Finally, Word defaults the numbers to be left-aligned and if you like that then you are set. However, if you like your numbers right-aligned, then click the blue dropdown arrow next to Number Position and select right.
Be sure to click OK when done.
