In Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type tab | uncheck the ';Automatic numbered lists'; box | OK.

In Word 2002 or 2003, click on Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type tab | uncheck the ';Automatic numbered lists'; box | OK.

In your list of command icons, you should see an icon that has little numbers (3, I think) stacked in the icon box... just highlight the text that was auto-numbered and click the numbering icon. It should immediately remove the numbering for the highlighted area.
