Why does the year numbering system have to be based off of a person?

Who was this person? Why was this person's birth so important?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't just some dude in Israel named Jesus, right? Why does the year numbering system have to be based off of a person?
Because I'm a bad@ss, of course...Why does the year numbering system have to be based off of a person?
Actually they got his birthday wrong...was probably 3 or 4 ad not zero. Also questions on where he was born. Not to mention only two gospels even mention the virgin birth.

And to the christian fellow above...sorry but there's debate over whether jesus was even a real person. I'm willing to allow it but there's no proof. And all the miraculous events aren't proven by anyone...just because someone writes it down. By that logic you have to accept the quran.

Lots of people were running aroudn at that time preforming ';miracles';. Jesus could just be a compliation of them. Not to mention that if you ask someone if elvis is dead or alive you can get 100 people off the street to say he's still alive. Other people have similar stories. Extrodinary claims require extroridnary evidence.
He is and was the only Begotten Son of GOD. History remembers the only man to do miracles like healing the blind, bringing back people from death, Ect....Most important man in history EVER, and I believe he is our LORD
Because it was developed by followers of this person, and it has become tradition to follow it.
That person was Chuck Norris.
He had the best rock band of all time.
Why not?
It isnt based off Jesus. AD means some latin stuff, and we now use BCE
