How does cycloalkane's locant numbering work?

for cyclohexane, is locant#1 on the very top? or the next one to the right? And how do we number cycloheptanes(octanes, nonanes, etc.)? Is there a consistent rule? How does cycloalkane's locant numbering work?
in a cycloalkane whether cyclohexane, cycloheptanes, etc withno substituents, all carbons are equal so it doesnt matter where you place locant #1. If you do start attachin substituents, lets say an hydroxyl group on top and a methyl group to the left or right, that's when number becomes important and in this case the locant with the OH would be #1 and the methyl #2, hope this helps
