Were the chapters and verse division always like that or did someone put it in later? if so when and how did they or he/she know where to put the chapter and verse divisions? How did the bible chapter/verse numbering system come about?
This started in about 1205 AD.
The guy who invented it was Stephen Langton, a professor in Paris who would later become the Archbishop of Canterbury.
He read the Bible and sometimes he did a good job of putting chapter and verse divisions in good places and at other times, he split a single sentence into two different chapters.
The purpose was just to provide a frame of reference in finding passages in the Bible.
There is nothing inspired about the nomenclature. How did the bible chapter/verse numbering system come about?
I never said it was full of mistakes. I said that sometimes he did a good job breaking chapter and verse into logical units, in fact most times he did, and other times he didn't do such a good job.
All Bible scholars know that the chapter and verse divisions are not inspired anyway. Report Abuse
