Why do page numbering on Word 2007 get messed up?

I am making a document on Word 2007. I am using columns for this purpose. In the first 4 pages, where I have not used columns the numbering is fine. Page 5 is the first page with columns. From Page 6 - 12, the numbering has gone hay-wired. Page 6 %26amp; Page 11 are shown as 1, Page 7-10 %26amp; 12 are shown as 2.

How can I rectify this? Why do page numbering on Word 2007 get messed up?
Hi Vab - I have never had any problems with page numbering in any versions of Word - I have just done three documents with the pages set up as you describe (using Word 2007) and they have all numbered the pages correctly for me.

I would strongly suggest you open a NEW document. Copy and paste your text only into it.

Then at the end of your page 4 insert your SECTION break. You may already know this but just in case:

Go into your Page Layout tab, into Page Setup group and choose the LAYOUT tab. Choose Start Section: New Page. Then go down to Apply to - and choose This Section. Click OK.

Put your cursor on page 5 - and insert your columns: Page Layout tab, Page setup group and choose columns. Select the number of columns you want on the page.

Once you have completed all the above go to the Insert Tab, Header and Footer Group and choose Page Number - make you choice of position etc.

I hope this helps you. Do not try to use your current document. Start afresh as described above. Let me know how you go.Why do page numbering on Word 2007 get messed up?
Word has Never been successful with page numbering and this new version lives up to the reputation.

The closest I can get you is probably this:

when the page numbers get out of whack, come up to the Ribbon and select Insert (tab) %26gt; Page Numbering %26gt; (check) Continue from Previous Section.
