I'm in dental school and I was just wondering if anyone out there who has been through it has a good method for remembering the Universal Tooth Numbering system. If you do, please share.
Thank you! What are your methods for remembering the Universal Tooth Numbering System?
I was lost at first because every time they talked about tooth number so and so I would have to count all the teeth of the mouth to figure which one they were talking about but then I memorized several teeth and I would know everything else from there... Just know that the Maxillary Centrals are 8 and 9 and the Mandibular Centrals are 24 and 25. Know that the Maxillary Right 3rd molar is #3, the Maxillary Left 3rd molar is #14. Also know the number of the Canines in the mandibular. then slowly you'll remember all of them. For example you'll know that tooth #7 is the max. right lateral because you know that the max. right central is #8 right? Anyway for now just pick several teeth through out the mouth and memorize their numbers. I hope I helped. Good luckWhat are your methods for remembering the Universal Tooth Numbering System?
I beg to differ... the maxillary right third molar is the wisdom tooth, which makes it tooth #1, and the maxillary left third molar is also a wisdom tooth, which makes it #16..... Report Abuse
It's a pain, but practice, practice, practice.
Here's a link to some flash cards that might help.

Alternatively, think about using the FDI System. It's simpler in concept once you get the hang of it. That's what we're taught in Oz.
upper right #1 lOWER left #32 The patients upper left, lower right
My method is first remembering the wisdom teeth. 1 is the upper right wisdom tooth, upper left wisdom tooth is 16 (an even number), 17 is lower left and 32 is lower right.
Then I remember that 8 %26amp; 9 are upper front teeth and 24 %26amp; 25 are lower front middle teeth.
Remember that and you're golden!!
Best wishes!!
If you're right-handed, make a '#1' with your hand as if you were counting to a child... then take that finger and put it to the upper right part of your cheek...that's where tooth #1 is...then slide your finger all the way to the upper left...that's where #16 is... down to the lower left is #17, and when you slide all the way to the lower right, it's #32.
Hope this helps~
