How do you insert page numbering on a page other than the first page in MS Word?

I have checked with MS Word ';Help'; and online and I cannot figure out how to insert page numbers on a page other than the first page.





More specifically, I have a document with a title page and an index, and I do not want the page numbering to begin, until the third page of the document. So, the physical page 3 will be marked as page 1. I know it has something to do with inserting section breaks, but everything I have tried does not work. Try this:





1. At the top of the first page you want off-numbered, click the Insert-%26gt;Break menu item.


2. Insert a Next Page type section break.


3. Click on the View-%26gt;Headers and Footers menu item.


4. On the menu that pops up, hover the cursor over the icons to find the one that says “Same as Previous.” It should be near the right end and be selected.


5. Deselect it.


6. Also on the menu, click the icon to the right of that one (it should say “Switch between Header and Footer”.


7. Deselect “Same as Previous” again.


8. Close the menu


9. Click the Insert-%26gt;Page Numbers menu item.


10. In the Page Numbers dialog box, click the Format button.


11. Set Page Numbering to start at the page number you want.


12. Click OK.


13. Click OK on the Page Numbers Dialog box if you want to insert a page number, or CANCEL if you don't.

-Page setup


-select the page layout tab (3rd tab)


-In the Header/Footer section there are 2 check boxes -- check the one that reads --Different first page





Then go to page 2 and do your normal footer page count. Report Abuse

there is option ';show the number on first page'; in the insert menu uncheck it
If you can't do it through page format, just insert the numbers as footer or headers. Of course you will have to do each one separately
I have Windows Vista. May be slightly different. Go to ';Insert';--%26gt;page number format. Play with that.
