I need to to make a 500 page spreadsheet on excel with columns labeled sequentially. Is there any way i can set up excel to do this automatically, so i do not have to manually type in every number? i also need it to start in the middle of a sequence, not at 1, how do i do this? How do I set up automatic column numbering in microsoft excel?
You can use autofill and group sheets to complete all sheets at one time. Also you can enter a STOP value of 500 IF you mean 500 columns or have LOTS of columns.
To enter the sequential numbers on lots of sheets all at the same time -
1) Group the sheets - (see tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet window)
Click the first sheet, eg Sheet1, then hold the Shift key down and click your last sheet, eg Sheet15. (All sheets 1 to 15 will be grouped).
2) Use either Autofill or Fill Series -
Example for Autofill
Type 129 in A1 and 130 in A2, select both cells, click the little cross in the right hand corner of that selection, and drag across the sheet.
(There are various other ways to do this).
Example for Fill Series if you have hundreds to enter
Type 129 in A1 and select it
Choose Edit %26gt; Fill %26gt; Series
In the box which opens
(Ensure it selects Rows and Step Value of 1)
Enter your STOP value, eg 500
Click OK
3) Finally UNGROUP the sheets
Right click on any one of the group of sheets
Choose Ungroup. How do I set up automatic column numbering in microsoft excel?
You can number the columns sequentially by using the Auto Fill tool or the the COLUMN function.
To Start in the middle of a sequence:
Start by putting the beginning number and the following number in adjacent columns for example 7,8 (you have to put the 2nd number in to begin the sequence otherwise it will just repeat the first number)
Select both cells, then pull the small black square (fill handle)in the lower right corner of the cells to the right. Excel will number them sequentially - you will have to pull all the way to the right but it's better than typing the number manually.
To begin with number 1:
If you are going to number sequentially you can click in cell A1 and enter the following equation: =COLUMN(A1) then drag the fill handle to the right to number sequentially.
Remember Excel only allows for 255 columns per sheet.
Good Luck
I would put a formula in that you coy copy over. Put whatever number you want to start with in the first column and then put a formula in the next column reference the first cell + 1 - then copy this formula over to the end.
Example =sum(A1+1) As you copy it across it will change the formula to =sum(B1+1) and so on.....
Enter the first number in your first cell.
Then hover over the cell and press the control key down.
Then click and drag down to the end. Then let go of the mouse button.
If the range is very big you can do it through a formula.
Enter the first number in cell a1. Then in the next cell's (b1) formula enter this:
=A1+ 1
Then click on the B1 cell and copy it. (Ctrl+C)
Then highlight all the cells you want the numbers in.
Then simply paste (Ctrl+V)
in column A (cell A1) just enter your starting # (let's say 13)
then put your mouse over the bottom right corner of the cell and right-click and drag across as many column as you want. When you let go, a menu will pop up. Select ';Series'; and just leave all the defaults as they are and click OK. That should fill in the series, increasing by one each time so you have 13, 14, 15, 16, etc.
File
Page Setup
Click on the ';Sheet'; tab
Check the box ';Row %26amp; Column Headings';
