How can i create an numbering system for my new inventory?

I am starting a jewlery business and have created many items to sell. Now I am needing a way to track the inventory.How can i create an numbering system for my new inventory?
Sort all the items in an array and give them a code name each beginning with a letter. e1, e2, e3, n1, n2 for ear ring and necklace etc...How can i create an numbering system for my new inventory?
