How does the legal numbering scheme work?

I'm specifically interested in what the difference is in 23-41-104(1) and 23-41-104(2) what is the difference with the numbers in parenthesis when I look up the two different ones they are on very different topics. but they share all the same numbers except for the last one. this doesn't make sense to me. How does the legal numbering scheme work?
The number in parenthesis is the subsection of the statute. So 29 USC 58(1) would be Title 29 United states code, chapter 58, sub section 1. Whereas 29 USC 58(2) would be subsection 2 of that same statutory provision. Try searching your statute without the parenthetical number (i.e. 23-41-104) And then you will see that when you put (1) at the end that is the first subsection of that statute, and (2) will be listed as well.
