How did the States or the highway dept. come up with the numbering system for all roads in the usa.?

The system was actually started by President Dwight Eisenhower.

When he was a general in World War 2, he chase Hitler and the Nazi's through Germany and was amazed at the quality of their roads compared to the ones in America.

The Nazis actually destroyed the highway behind them as they moved, so that Eisenhower and his troops would have trouble following them.

When Eisenhower was elected they started building the interstates and the planned interstate system has still not been completed to this day.

The numbering system was created back when the interstates were in their infancy, and I believe interstate 10 was the first highway ever built. How did the States or the highway dept. come up with the numbering system for all roads in the usa.?

Should answer your question. How did the States or the highway dept. come up with the numbering system for all roads in the usa.?
That was started by President Eisenhower back in the 50's. The even numbered highways run east-west direction, the odd numbered ones run in a north-south direction. It's a navigational aid. The mile markers also are a navigation aid. On north-south highways, they start at the southern state line and count toward the north. On east-west highways they start at the western state line and count toward the east. In most states, the exit ramps are numbered according to the nearest mile marker. This is another navigational aid. Just take the mile marker you are at and the exit number you want and subtract one from the other to know how far you have to go.
